Grab, Southeast Asia’s challenger to Uber, has announced plans to hire 800 more developers over the next two years and open two new R&D centres in India and Vietnam.
The recruitment push announced on Wednesday is a significant expansion of its current headcount of around 2000 staff. Singapore-based Grab, which operates across six countries in Southeast Asia, already has four R&D centres – in Singapore, Jakarta, Beijing and Seattle.
The new Grab centre in India will be in Bangalore and will focus on new technology for GrabPay, Grab’s digital payments platform.
Grab runs R&D centres outside its Southeast Asian base to attract engineers reluctant to move their families to the region.
Grab co-founder Tan Hooi Ling said:
At Grab we are focused on solving the toughest local problems through technology. Southeast Asia is developing at a breakneck pace and we have an unprecedented opportunity to deliver a platform that caters to the region’s mobile-first environment and infrastructural needs.
