Sony has for the first time released sales figures for its virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, showing the total creeping up on the 1m mark after its launch in October.

Sony revealed in a statement on Monday that sales of PlayStation VR had hit the 915,00 unit mark as of February 19, while its estimated install base for the PS4 – which is required to operate the PlayStation VR – stood at 53.4m.

Sony’s first foray into mass-market virtual reality launched in October with two retail packages priced at $399 and $499 in the US, positioned competitively with PC counterparts Oculus Rift ($599) and HTC Vive ($799).

“We are increasing production to meet demand and will continuously support content developers as they create innovative VR experiences that are only possible on PlayStation,” said Andrew House, president and global chief executive officer of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

That statement and sales figure for Sony’s VR system follow a previous statement made shortly after the product’s launch noting the company would ramp up production to meet demand.

Sony shares were down 1.5 per cent on Monday, slightly worse than the 1.4 per cent decline for the broader Topix benchmark.
