Spotify is set add 1,000 jobs in New York by 2018 and move its US headquarters to the World Trade Centre site as part of its ongoing expansion in the US.

The Swedish music start-up has been growing its presence in New York as it doubles down on content and relationships with artists. The company will be hiring across operations, including product and engineering, music industry relations, content and editorial. “New York gives us access to the most diverse talent market in the world,” said Horacio Gutierrez, Spotify’s general counsel.

The company will receive $11m in rent credits as part of the government’s effort to lure companies to the World Trade Center site and lower Manhattan.

Spotify, which is shoring up its finances as it gears up for an IPO, in December abandoned plans to buy rival SoundCloud.

Spotify, the market leader in music streaming, has been working to build out new content, such as videos and podcasts, to meet growing competition from Apple Music, which has scooped up 20m paying customers since launching 18 months ago.
